Furaibo on Sawtelle is a great hole in the wall "Izakaya" (Japanese tapas = small appetizer dishes, usually shared by the table). The food and atmosphere are fantastic, the closest Japanese joint in LA next to those restaurant/bars in Japan I frequented while living there.
The staff is friendly, food is great-I highly suggest the teba saki (chicken wings), agedashi dofu (friend tofu), and hanpen cheese (fried fishcake, wrapped in seaweed with cheese-similar to a grilled cheese sandwhich). Beer and sake is the perfect drinks to compliment the menu, not to mention Oolong Hai's (oolong tea with sho-chu alcohol).
The crowd is fairly young, ranging from UCLA students to 30-something young professionals to the Japanese community members living nearby in West LA. Just keep in mind that going at dinner time can be a 30-45 minute wait, but it is WELL WORTH IT. I would wait anytime for the good food and ambiance.
